Miroca Paris in Rotterdam

“There is nothing better than a live concert, full of energy and audience interaction,” says the Cape Verdean-Portuguese artist about his new album, Miroca Paris Live in Warsaw. “We had to go without it for so long, so when my tour in Poland finally went ahead last year, I immediately seized the opportunity to record a concert with a real audience—to share with people who are less fortunate.”

The singer and multi-instrumentalist visits the Netherlands every year and was originally scheduled to return in April 2020, right after a nine-month tour with Madonna. The Queen of Pop herself had moved to Miroca’s hometown of Lisbon, where she became immersed in the warm, spirited, and sometimes melancholic music of the Portuguese-speaking community. Inspired, she invited Miroca—who had played for a decade with his idol Cesária Évora—to join her Madame X documentary and tour.

Connoisseurs know Miroca Paris as the innovative percussionist who performed for a decade alongside Cesária Évora—‘The Barefoot Diva’. Encouraged by Évora, he took the step of sharing his own music with the world. He has since performed material from his debut album, D’alma, on stages across four continents, presenting a contemporary, personal take on styles such as coladeira, funaná, and—of course—morna (recently designated as World Heritage by UNESCO). Paris’s warm, slightly raw voice, driving rhythms, and distinctive guitar playing come together in original compositions that are now resonating with audiences worldwide.

His live album has just been nominated for an International Portuguese Music Award. While it remains to be seen whether he will actually take home the prize in mid-April, Dutch audiences can catch this ‘young veteran’ in performance at Theater Zuidplein on April 6th.
